Wills: storing your will

The current Wills Act for England & Wales requires that you physically store the signed will, ready to be presented by your Executor to apply for Probate; a key legal step in executing your will. You should store in a secure, fireproof location, and let your executor or key contacts know where to find it.

It’s also a good idea to store a scanned copy of your fully executed will electronically. Currently this doesn’t replace the original paper based document, but can act as an important back-up.

You can store your will in adeus, alongside the electronic drafts of all your previous wills. Providing a permanent record of changes in your will over time.

Making a PDF copy of your signed will

Before you can upload a copy of your signed will to adeus, you will need to scan and save a copy in PDF format. This is simplest and most secure document format for signed documents like wills. PDFs keep your will clear, complete and unchanged, unlike photos or other file types that can distort pages, crop content or reduce legibility.

Search for our articles on 'scan using a printer/scanner', 'create a PDF on iPhone', or 'create a PDF on Android' for instructions on how to do this quickly and easily.

You can also use a PDF merging tool if you have individual pages that you want to combine in one document. There are many out there, and one that has been recommended by some of our customers is https://www.ilovepdf.com/merge_pdf . It has 4.9 stars on TrustPilot. If you are an Apple user, the Preview app on Mac can also merge documents automatically.
