Setting Up Instagram for Memorialization
- Understanding Instagram's Policies:
- Unlike Facebook, Instagram does not have a designated legacy contact feature.
- Family members or close friends can request the memorialization of your account after you pass away or request account removal.
Memorializing an Account on Instagram
- Report a Deceased Person's Account:
- To request that an account be memorialized, a family member or close friend must fill out the Memorialization Request Form on Instagram’s Help Center.
- The person requesting will need to provide proof of death (such as a death certificate, obituary, or news article).
- Memorialized Account Features:
- Once memorialized, the account will have the word "Remembering" shown next to the person’s name.
- The account remains visible to followers but cannot be logged into, and no changes can be made to the account’s existing posts, followers, or profile information.
Requesting Account Removal
- Request Permanent Removal of the Account:
- To permanently remove an account, a family member must complete the Request to Remove a Deceased Person's Account form available on Instagram’s Help Center.
- Proof of death and proof of the requester’s relationship to the deceased (such as birth certificates, power of attorney, or estate letters) will be required.
- Process Confirmation:
- Instagram will review the request and confirm the account removal if all documentation is in order.
Additional Considerations
- No Legacy Contact:
- Since Instagram does not offer a legacy contact, you should communicate your wishes regarding your account with a trusted person or include instructions in your digital estate planning.
- Privacy and Control:
- Instagram accounts cannot be modified or logged into once memorialized, ensuring the privacy and integrity of the deceased’s digital legacy.
